Where the governments disagree on Antarctica

United Kingdom alone rates Antarctica at level 1. Every other government places it higher, all at level 2. Where one government is markedly more relaxed than the rest, the safer planning assumption is the majority view rather than the most reassuring one.

Currency varies between sources. United Kingdom's is the oldest assessment of Antarctica on file, last revised in April 2025, while the rest have been reviewed more recently. The stricter view is also the more recently reviewed one, so it may reflect developments that the more relaxed assessments predate.

Your own government's rating is the one your insurer and embassy will act on, so read that source first — the one level of daylight between the strictest and most relaxed assessments here is context, not a substitute for it.

Derived from 6 government assessments for Antarctica, most recently reviewed in August 2026.
