Where the governments disagree on Colombia

Opinion on Colombia is divided, though not dramatically: ratings run from level 2 to level 3. Three of the twelve take the stricter view, and the remaining nine see no cause for it. A one-level split of this kind usually reflects differing thresholds between governments rather than a dispute about the facts.

These assessments are not equally current. Japan's dates from October 2024 — roughly 2.0 years old — so it describes conditions that may have changed several times over since.

The warnings for Colombia are not uniform across the country. 43 distinct areas are singled out by at least one government. Among them: Various areas in western, eastern, and southern Colombia and Immediate border areas to Venezuela in Norte de Santander. At least one of these carries the highest possible rating, meaning a government advising against all travel there while rating the rest of the country lower.

The level 3 rating from United States, South Korea and Taiwan carries practical weight even if your own government is more relaxed — insurers commonly price against, or exclude, travel contrary to official advice, so the rating that matters most is the one issued for your passport.
